Today children had lesson about Groundhog Day and they made beautiful crafts.

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the USA on February 2nd. Each year on this day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, people from all over the USA watch Phil the Groundhog as he emerges from his burrow. If it is sunny, he will see his shadow and there will be 6 more weeks of winter weather. But if  the sky is cloudy, he will not see his shadow and spring weather will come very soon.

Today children had lesson about countries and flags. They found out more about Germany- its location on a map and capital.

When introducing vocabulary to young learners, it’s great to use real items that capture children’s attention. However, it’s not always possible or realistic for teachers to use real items in the classroom. Flashcards can be a great way to introduce new vocabulary so that learners have a very clear understanding of the word or concept.
Staś could be a teacher for a moment:)
We played a lot of fun games during the lesson. Children’s favourite  was “Flag memory game”.

Hugs and kisses,
Anton

On Friday our English lesson was about health and illnesses. The class was divided into two groups: Doctors and Patients. Doctors were given the Patient Cards and the Treatment Cards. The purpose of these materials was to get the students to practice visiting a doctor and communicating in English. This was a fairly simple and enjoyable role-play . In short, students went to the doctor and described their ailment, got a prescription and some advice. It was a really fun lesson and everybody wanted to be a doctor:)

Today we had lesson about St.Patrick’s Day. Here are the things we found out about this holiday:
- St. Patrick’s Day is the national holiday of Ireland and is usually celebrated on March 17.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a popular holiday in the United States. People wear green and eat corned beef and cabbage.

It is believed St. Patrick, a Roman-Britain-born Christian missionary, was born in the late fourth century and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people.

Most people, whether they are Irish or not, wear green on this day. One of the Irish traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish immigrants began observing the holiday in Boston in 1737 and the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in 1766.

The shamrock, pot-of-gold and leprechans are also associated with St. Patrick’s Day. The three leaves also represent the Trinity in the Christian religion. The leprechaun is a small Irish fairy. He is dressed like a shoemaker, with pointed shoes and hat. He also wears a leather apron. Leprechauns are supposed to be unfriendly little men who lives alone in the forest, spending all of their time making shoes and guarding their treasures. If someone catches a leprechaun, he will be forced to tell where he hides all his pots of gold. However, the leprechaun must be watched at all times. If his captor looks away, the leprechaun will vanish along with his treasure.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a holiday all around the world and for one day out of the year anyone can be Irish and join in the celebration.

Children made paper dolls  - Lucy and Luis the Leprechaun . They designed clothes for them. I need to start looking for green clothes to be ready for St.Patrick's Day:)
Lots of love
Anton

On Friday we had lesson about Easter in UK. We also played an amazing Easter game - rules were pretty simple. Thanks to the game, students practiced memory and vocabulary. We all sat  in a circle. The board with nine rabbits caps and 50 carrots was in the middle. Each student took one carrot. The students had to remember which picture was under which rabbit! After the first round, students' task was to raise three rabbits in the same order as on their carrots. Each time students rose a rabbit they had to say the word out loud in English. If they managed they could keep the carrot, if not they could  try in the next round .Students with the highest number of carrots were the winners! Children really enjoyed the game and wanted to continue playing even during the break !

Hello children,
today I would like to tell you about my weekend at Klara's house and about Easter in Poland.

40 days before Easter there is Lent (Wielki Post). It starts on Ash Wednesday (Środa Popielcowa). Then all families go to church and priest put ash on their heads. One week before Easter they celebrate Palm Sunday (Niedziela Palmowa). On that day people go to church and they take with them colourful artificial palms. They’re usually made from branches of native trees, including box, willow, yew and olive.

Holy Friday (Wielki Piątek) is a day of religious meditation and fasting. On that day children don’t go to school.
On Holy Saturday (Wielka Sobota) everybody goes to church with baskets. In the baskets they have food: eggs (a symbol of new life), bread, salt and meat and other decorations: a lamb, chickens and bunnies made of sugar.
In Poland eggs are not only used as food on the table. As well, they’re an important part of the Easter tradition. Children decorate them with paints, crayons, stickers, tissue-paper etc. After they’re ready they are used as a decoration for the Easter table and they’re also a part of the Easter bucket.
Dyeing and decorating eggs is an Easter tradition.

Holy Sunday (Wielkanoc) is a day of joy. We had a huge breakfast. We ate all food that we carried to church on Holy Saturday. Then we went for a walk and visited an outdoor gym by the sea.

Oh, I've nearly forgotten to tell you about Wet Easter Monday:) It is a family holiday in Poland and is called Smigus Dyngus (also called Smingus-Dyngus), or Wet Monday, after the practice of men and boys pouring water on women and girls.
What are my tips for you if you visit Poland on that day? Don’t leave home alone unless…you carry a huge water gun with yourself to fight back!:)

Finally! Spring has arrived. It is the season of new beginnings. Fresh buds bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds and temperatures slowly rise.  Our English lesson was about this amazing season. We  drew and wrote a mind map connected with spring.  Things commonly associated with this season were frogs,ladybirds,trees,ice-creams,bikes,wellingtons,butterflies, bees, umbrellas, grass and many more.

We played  a memory game -matching flowers with their pots.  It was  great fun!

15.04.- 18.04.
On Friday we had a cool game to practise the personal pronouns and the verb  'be', this is how to play:
1. Put the kids in pairs.
2. One kid says something like “I am hungry”.
3. The other kid flips it to be “You are hungry”
4. The first kid says another “I am …” phrase.
5. The other kid makes it into a “You are …” phrase.
6. But… if the first kid says “I am a tiger” both kids have to run to the nearest wall.
7. The first one to touch the wall gets a point.
8. Change partners.
It’s very simple but the adrenaline from not knowing when you have to run means you really concentrate and get lots of speaking practice. You can also use slightly larger groups of 4 or 5 to do he, she, they we etc.

I also wanted to let you know that I had amazing time at Nikodem's house during this weekend. You can have a sneek peek at  pictures below:)

20.04-22.04.
Do you know the Headbanz game?
The premise of this game is to guess what picture is over your head. The picture is visible to everyone else but you. Hedbanz is not only fun, but inherently educational.  Kids  flex their deductive reasoning skills with the game's simple question-and-answer premise. By making connections and coming up with questions that lead to answers, kids also practice creative critical thinking skills.  We also played option with giving clues and it was also great fun.

I spent the weekend with Julia and her family. Here are some photos of our trip.
